Montero sits near Pier 6, slightly removed from the busier parts of the neighborhood, and feels very much like a classic neighborhood watering hole. The space leans heavily into a nautical theme, with a rustic, time-capsule quality that gives it a certain charm. It has the feel of a place that has been around for a long time, likely family-run, and built on regulars and familiarity.
I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. The bartender was warm, engaging, and easy to talk to, which made the experience more enjoyable. Service was not the issue here.
The pricing, however, caught me off guard. A bottled High Life came out to seven dollars, which felt steep for a beer that typically runs closer to four dollars at most dive bars in New York. My girlfriend ordered a tequila soda for ten dollars, served in a small plastic cup. At that price point, the presentation and portion size did not quite align with expectations.
The atmosphere is what carries the experience. It is easy to imagine the place coming alive later in the evening, especially once the crowd builds and drinks start flowing. There is also a pool table in the back, which adds to the classic bar feel, though the space itself is

Montero Bar and Grill is a hidden gem
In Elizabeth City N.C.
Chef Andy who is also the owner and his wife are amazing. Such a great team.
His staff is 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
The speed of the group is determined by the speed of the leader. I can tell his staff enjoys working for him.
His team gave us the same care and energy that Chef Andy gave us.
Our experience was so amazing, that e went back the next day for dinner and we brought more people.
Next time I’m in Elizabeth City, I will definitely go there for dinner.
Also, the drinks are amazing🍷🥃
Chef Andy, thank you for a memorable experience.

I don't think this place serves food anymore. I am always in for a good cash bar that is run by a family. The family is at the bar, and they want you to enjoy yourself. The drinks are reasonably priced in a part of Brooklyn that seems to be going upscale quickly.

Original, old-school Brooklyn bar. Hip before hipsters were hip. Don't bother asking what's on tap because they don't have them. Bottles of beer with no nonsense, but the owner and bar staff are welcoming and chatty with anyone. They make you feel like a local within minutes.
Don't assume the 'bar and grill' on the signage means anything more than just 'bar'.
